Description
Born in San Diego , CA on December 27, 1924, Robert Noble realized his love for airplanes when his father brought home a balsam-wood model for him to assemble. As a child, he “ate, dreamed and lived’ airplanes, cementing his future in the 8th grade, where he proclaimed his career as a pilot to his fellow students at Roosevelt Junior High School in San Diego. It was also at this school where Bob met and fell head over heels for his childhood sweetheart, Miss Cotta Donnell, who would become his wife and true love for 64 years.
The most significant month in his life was August 1945, starting with the news that two atomic weapons had been dropped on Japan on August 6th and 9th of 1945. On August 21st, Bob was commissioned and designated a naval aviator in the last war time class at Pensacola. On August 28, Bob married his junior high girlfriend, Cotta, in a marriage that lasted 64 years. He enlisted in the US Navy on December 13, 1942 where he applied for the Navy Aviation Cadet Program. Bob entered active duty in July of 1943.
Bob’s naval career spanned 31 years, 6 months, and 18 days. During his service he flew PBY-6A, PBM-5 Mariner seaplane, and completed search & rescue missions in a HU-16 “Albatross.” His message for today’s generation: “Your education is the foundation and preparation for the rest of your life. It really never ends; learning is a lifelong pursuit. NEVER drop out of school. If you can go to college, GO! Find a way. If you love what you are doing, it will never be work.”
