Commemorate Memorial Day with these Films

Although our Memorial Day celebrations will look a little different this year, it is important that we still take the time to remember and honor those who have served our nation. This week, we have a new lineup of films and programs that honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Remains: The Search for SFC Samuel J. Padgett: On his birthday in April 1968, Sergeant First Class Samuel J. Padgett and three other U.S. soldiers boarded a CH-34 helicopter flying on a mission to Kham Duc, South Vietnam. During the flight, the chopper unexpectedly lost power, descended rapidly, and crashed into the jungle. In January 2017, nearly fifty years to the day, a team of archaeologists and U.S. service members, armed with new evidence and modern technology, returned to the site of the crash in hopes of repatriating SFC Padgett and returning him home to his family. Streaming fees for the film will go towards Project Recover. Learn more. ACCESS the film.

National Memorial Day Concert: This Sunday, the National Memorial Day Concert pays tribute to the men and women who are doing so much for all of us in the current fight against COVID-19, and continue the 31 year tradition of honoring and remembering our troops, veterans, wounded warriors, all those who have given their lives for freedom, and their families. STREAM on pbs.org.

XVII Carvings: Marine Corps veteran Anthony Marquez takes on a quest to create a memorial for the 17 fellow Marines that his unit lost in Afghanistan. Anthony is doing this by carving with chainsaws a “Battlefield Cross” for every Gold Star family affected by that loss. He then hand delivers the carvings to the families. To some, this may just be folk art…to Anthony it’s his new mission in life, to honor the fallen. WATCH.
