September 24 | Reading Recommendation

September 24, 2020

This week, we decided to step away from our screens and recommend a graphic novel telling the story of an often-forgotten tragedy.

They Called Us Enemy: Created by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott, and Harmony Becker, “They Called Us Enemy” is a graphic novel memoir about Takei’s experience in an internment camp during World War II. Through a young Takei’s eyes, we see how both his family and his future are affected by his time behind the barbed wire. The graphic novel is also the KPBS One Book, One San Diego 2020 selection.

As a renowned actor and advocate, George Takei is no stranger to the San Diego area.  He starred in the film “American” that opened our 2018 GI Film Festival San Diego. His experiences in internment also inspired the musical “Allegiance”, which Takei starred in during its runs in San Diego and on Broadway.
