Description

Pearl Harbor survivors speak out about their experiences on December 7, 1941, when the United States was attacked by Japan and consequently thrust into World War II.

Stuart Hedley, a crew member on the battleship, USS West Virginia when it was hit, Ray Chavez, the oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor at 105-years-old, was a crew member on the USS Condor, a minesweeper, and the first American ship believed to have made visual contact with a Japanese Naval vessel, Woody Derby, a crew member on the battleship, USS Nevada when it was hit several times, and Gordon Jones, stationed at the Kaneohe Naval Air Station as it was called at the time, tell their stories of December 7, 1941, the date that has lived in infamy.

Director's Bio

Howard Lipin has been a staff photojournalist at the San Diego Union-Tribune for more than 30-years, capturing every type of news and sporting event that has shaped San Diego County and Southern California. He is an Emmy award winner, as well as having received numerous other awards for photojournalistic excellence during his career. He was the co-creator of the Internet radio shows, PhotoTalkRadio.com and Shutterbug Magazine Radio, and has made appearances on local television and radio broadcasts.

Luis Cruz is the Director of News & Programming at The San Diego Union-Tribune. He oversees the newsroom’s video productions and broadcast partnerships. Luis is an Emmy award-winning journalist with more than 20 years of television broadcasting experience. Prior to joining the Union-Tribune in March 2013, Luis was the News Director and an anchor at KYMA-TV in Yuma, Arizona. Luis has also been a reporter and an anchor for various stations in Nevada, California, and Arizona. He earned his B.A. Degree in political science from U.C. Berkeley.

    "The Last Ring Home” is the incredible story of U.S. Navy officer and Word War II hero Lieutenant Minter Dial and his last wish to have his Annapolis ring returned to his wife after 2 1/2 years of imprisonment by the Japanese. Compiling 25 years of research and 130 interviews with his grandparents’ peers, grandson Minter embarked on a journey to discover his grandparents and bring healing to his father by uncovering the mystery of how the ring was lost and found, as well as its lasting legacy.
